QUICK DEFINITIONS

CIRCULATOR = pump that circulates water or heating fluid throughout the system

CLOSED LOOP = solar loop is separated from water pressure by a heat exchanger

COLLECTOR = a solar collector absorbs the sun's energy and converts it into heat

DIFFERENTIAL CONTROL = electronic device that monitors collector and storage temperatures and automatically turns a circulation pump on or off at the appropriate temperature differentials (the pump is turned on when heat is available or when freeze recirculation is needed and off when no energy is available)

GLYCOL = freeze protected heating fluid used in closed loop systems to heat water

HE = Heat Exchanger - a device that transfers heat from one place to another

OG100 = SRCC rating for collectors that qualify for the Federal Tax Credit

OG300 = SRCC rating for systems

OPEN LOOP = solar loop is open to water pressure

POTABLE WATER = water that is safe to drink

PREMIUM = Systems designed with more features and parts for easier installation.

PV = photovoltaic (solar electric, meaning the sun's energy is converted to electricity)

RHEEM = Brand name of tank used in Skyline Solar Water Heating Systems (also Rudd or Richmond)

SENSOR = electronic thermister that detects temperatures

SNAP SWITCH = a mechanical device that opens or closes depending on temperature.

V = Volts

VALUE = Systems with lower initial cost due to use of essential of parts.
