NEW YORK SOLAR ENERGY NEWS

CORNELL UNIVERSITY JOINS TSEC CONSORTIUM
TO IMPROVE PV TECHNOLOGY FOR NY CLUSTER

June 9, 2008 - Based on Cornell University Daily News article

In January 2008 Cornell University announced it would join a group of other New York universities and solar companies to establish a major solar energy cluster in Kingston, NY. This group of researchers, known as The Solar Energy Consortium (TSEC), also includes Binghamton University, Clarkson University, Resselaer Polytechnic Institute, SUNY New Paltz and City University of New York. Cornell's role will be to research improvements in materials and nanotechnology for solar PV technology.

U.S. Representative Maurice Hinchey, from New York's 22nd District, has successfully secured approval of $3.2 million for TSEC's solar research and development. The Congressman is seeking additional funding. TSEC is a nonprofit organization that will offer leadership, organization and research for the project.

LONG ISLAND POWER AUTHORITY REQUESTS

50 MEGAWATTS OF SOLAR POWER

June 10, 2008 - Based on 5/7/08 article on U.S. Department of Energy's EERE website

Long Island Power Authority (LIPA), a utility serving Long Island, has announced it is seeking proposals for 50 megawatts of solar PV power to be fed into the electric grid. Project developers will own or lease commercial solar energy systems with at least 100 kilowatt capacity and sell the power to LIPA under a long-term contract. This project will meet almost 1% of LIPA's power needs and will make up the biggest block of solar energy in New York State.

Proposals for the project are due June 27, 2008. LIPA expects to make recommendations for an awared to its Board of Trustees this October.

According to the Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA), 254 megawatts of photovoltaic and concentrating solar energy were installed in the United States in 2007, bringing total U.S. grid-based PV capacity to 750 megawatts.
