AL C. RICH BIOGRAPHY

Al Rich was born “Albert Clark Rich” in Wolfeboro New Hampshire. He spent his first 8 years on a beautiful farm with over 100 acres in the Tuftonboro Hills overlooking 8 mountain ranges and all of Lake Winnipesaukee with its 365 islands. Winnipesaukee is Indian for “Smile of the Great Spirit” and the Rich family later owned a 66-acre island on it.  The farm had a chicken barn with 7,000 chickens and was also known as “Rich Acres,” a boy’s farm camp for 4 years.

After the age of 8, Al’s mother and father, “Berta and Bud” turned into “Snow Birds” and Al had his first trip to Florida with his bedroom being the front seat of a 1953 VW “Microbus."  Eventually Al will have made that north-south trip 17 times and joke about being an east coast “yoyo."

Al was always a dreamer; visioning factories and living in a world all his own much of the time. Perhaps he was influenced by his aviation pioneer father who was always tinkering and designing things. He loved to play with trains and cars as well as build models.  As a teen he enjoyed slalom water skiing and modifying cars.

Al went to many schools in New Hampshire and Florida, spent his junior year home schooled with his family touring Mexico in a “Wally Byam” Airstream trailer caravan.  He graduated from Fort Lauderdale High School and soon got into the Automotive Restoration business and with a friend founded “ACAR,” Antique Classic Auto Restoration. Al’s favorite to work on was the Rolls Royce.

Not satisfied with fixing up old cars, he heard about a camp in Colorado called “Adventures Unlimited” that was building a solar pool heater. In 1977 he went to the camp and helped build a “trickle down” solar pool heating system and was hooked on solar from that point on.

Al created a “Special Studies” Program at Principia College and in one very special class called “In Basket” he interviewed school executives and recorded their management style and process. After graduation from Principia a friend’s father introduced him to a solar system manufacturer in Connecticut and AC Rich & Sun was born.  Al Married Susan McGee in 1984 in Alexandria, Virginia and had their first 3 children in Herndon, Virginia.  Two were born at home with a midwife and Al’s participation.

Home is now in Carmichael, CA. Al’s loving wife, Susan, has put up with his very long entrepreneural hours for the past 18 years.  Susan works as a CS Graduate Nurse and is a very dedicated mother to their 4 children.

Ashley is 20 and has worked for SolarRoofs.com for over 5 years! She created the SolarRoofs.com Shopping cart among many contributions. She is also an Honor Student, Artist and has been on the wrestling team at El Camino High School. Katherine is 18 and loves Piano, Acting, and Dancing, Clark is 16, an excellent “Gamer” was a “Pinewood Derby” Champion and, like Dad, loves to build things.  Thomas, our only “born in California” child’s birth was a family affair with a midwife at their Carmichael home, is 10. He keeps the family laughing with his creative and funny antics.  The family’s pets consist of the family dogs, Penelope and Buttercup, and the family cat, Tiger.

Al cares deeply about the vital need to improve our earth's environment. He is dedicated to leaving a cleaner earth as a legacy to his four children, their children, and all the children on earth.
